So far this year (November 27, 2011) no snow at Niagara Falls, which is not particularly unusual. So I thought I’d give you a nice ice and snow filled picture from previous years at the falls. This is the Niagara Gorge immediately below the Canadian-Horseshoe Falls, with the American Falls in the distance.
It isn’t that the ice forms on the river below the falls (there’s too much turbulence to allow ice to form, it’s because ice flows go over the Falls and pile up below, eventually joining together. Of course the mist from the falls does freeze when it is very cold, and builds an ice wall in front of the falls. I have other pictures here showing these ice formations.
