Black Heron Visiting

We get such a variety of people, animals and birds here in Niagara. Seems everyone wants to visit.

I came out of the house heading for a tour of Niagara, and what do I see on the power line behind the house? Why it’s a Black-crowned Heron. The plumage is gray and white with a distinctive black cap and a pair of white plumes that extend from the back of the head. While most herons are roosting during the night, the Black-crowned Night-Heron is up feeding on fish, frogs, crustaceans and even small mammals. Guess he’s late having supper this day.

This heron migrates in large flocks almost exclusively at night, resting during the daylight hours. Their spring migration generally occurs from mid-February through mid-May. Fall migration occurs from mid-July through October. Here it is early August so the migration time-line is right on.
